Computers have no morals. They’re machines that can be used for good or bad. They’re simply a tool. Just like guns. Monique had used both, and she wasn’t sure what gave her more satisfaction. Probably the computer. She’d rather see bad people fucked up than dead. Dead was final. Fucked up could go on and on.
She just wasn’t sure she was fucking up the right people. After Caleb’s admission that he was checking into a Treasury Department investigation of SAS, she realized she was working both sides of the same coin. For the two men in her life. Monique wasn’t sure how she felt about that. Conflicted was an understatement.
Getting into the Treasury’s servers wasn’t difficult. She had hacked much securer systems. Like all government agencies, Treasury lacked creativity. She just had to think like a robot, and before long, she was in. Caleb had given her a code word for their investigation. Although she spent two days on it, she couldn’t uncover anything about that investigation, let alone the person they had undercover. That particular investigation was locked down tightly. However, she’d found several e-mails from the Federal Reserve to an insurance company called AIS. All of them were about funding a life insurance company owned by AIS, which the Federal Reserve owned stock in. It seemed like the Federal Reserve was concerned about how much more money they needed.
She copied the e-mails and forwarded them to Caleb through a secure web server.
Her work for Zane wasn’t simple, either. He hadn’t given her much to go on. All he gave her was an address. He’d told her his wife’s death had occurred at that address, so she could assume they weren’t good people. The address was enough, though. She established ownership through real-estate records. Even though Tom Moore’s operation was a shell corporation owned by a shell corporation, she hacked into the secretary of state’s records and tracked it backward. After two days of combing through corporate filings in multiple states and three phone calls to people who owed her favors, she had a name. Alan Thompson. He was the owner of all the shells, including the one that owned the building where Zane’s wife perished. All real-estate purchases had been in cash, so Thompson didn’t lack for funds. Tom Moore was listed as a corporate officer on all the various corporations, but he had no ownership. He likely worked for Thompson. However, all deposits into Thompson’s account originated with the Federal Reserve via electronic deposits. She knew the Federal Reserve facilitated electronic funds transactions, but this was more than just facilitation. Zane thought the deposits looked strange, as well.
It was fun to hear the excitement in Zane’s voice as they infiltrated Thompson’s financial records. Their collaboration had felt right.
On the other hand, she wasn’t stupid. As much as she was attracted to both Zane and Caleb, she needed to find out more about them to stay on top of this peculiar situation. Nothing came up when she searched for Caleb Rider.
